Notre Dame Kerala

Parassala, Trivandrum

July 10, 1992 marked the beginning of Notre Dame mission in Parassala as a response to the invitation of Rt. Rev. Soosai Packiam Bishop of the Latin Diocese of Trivandrum to join the diocesan team of Basic Christian Community Project. Sr. Shobhana, the then Provincial of the Assumption Province accompanied Sr. M. Jayanti, Sr. Daisy and Sr. Priyanka, to their new home called 'Jyothis'. Many sisters worked in the team as members, directors and animators for almost 18 years. Now the mission there is temporarily closed. Much of the aim of the project there was accomplished and great changes have been witnessed in the area too. The place now awaits new movements and new initiatives.

Idichakkaplamood

Sisters working in Parassala with Basic Christian Communities were instrumental in buying the land to begin educational activities in and around that area. On Sept. 8, 2000, the community in Idichakkaplamood was instituted with Sr. M. Vibha as the Local Superior. In 2001 the school began with 24 students in the pre-primary section. A Vocational Training Centre for the women also was started side by side where women were taught Tailoring, Embroidery, Doll- making and other craft works. The sisters are engaged in other ministries like pastoral care in three neighbouring parishes, Sunday Catechesis, Youth Animation and Animating Parish Pious Associations. They join BCC Groups, help in the Faith Formation of the people and prepare them for reception of the Sacraments along with their day-long engagement in the school.

Vettikuzhy

On Sep. 8th 1999 two Notre Dame Sisters, Sr.Daisy and Sr. Karuna began the presence of Notre Dame at Chaippankuzhy in a single room of Fr. Paul Payyappilly's house. The parish priest, Sr. Anima, the provincial, Sr. Jaya, the regional superior, Srs. Reeta and Jayanti added to the blessedness of this new beginning of Notre Dame in Kerala.

Initially the sisters visited the families to get to know the people and their needs. At the request of Fr.Davis Thattil and the parishioners to start a school, Sr. Anima and her Council agreed to begin the much needed school in Chaipankuzhy. In the encouraging presence of the people of the place, Sr. Karuna, the Headmistress welcomed 38 students on June 18, 2001 marking the beginning of Notre Dame, Vettikuzhy. Classes were conducted in the parish hall.

A convent building was constructed by March 2001 in the newly purchased property in Vettikuzhy and the school was shifted temporarily into the same building for another six months.

Besides the involvement in the school, the Sisters carry on the pastoral ministry of the parish.
